Teachers: the kids are unbearably misbehaved!! Parents: IDK CHERYL, MAYBE it has something to do with our collapsing economy and parents unable to make ends meet without both of us working 60+ hours a week and our kids take notice of the dying earth we are handing off to them?????

Everything is a capital joke to keep us poor. First day of school pics, school shopping, must have new backpack and shoes, all new clothes, Halloween costumes, candy for the neighbors, oh wait and decorations, but wait do it again for Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then NYE. Spirit Week, make sure to buy a Hawaiin t shirt, 50s outfit, polkadots and stripes. Make sure to do something fancy for spring break. Something for summer. Wait and birthdays and other holidays. Wait and pay the bills, the subscriptions, the gas. Just over and over and over and over

My kids are 21, 16 and 11. Working most of the day for most of the week with the weight of the burning world and the stress that comes with all of that on top of raising kids, trying to do all of the already hard shit in this kind of society and in recent years trying to prepare for literally any and every possible catastrophe have enough cash/water/food/alt energy/a FUCKING GEIGER COUNTER and is it even going to matter when the oceans swallow us whole in ten years, navigating health needs and just all of it, it’s definitely affecting my ability to be the mom I want to be. The one I once was.

It does feel impossible, and like I'm drowning daily in the guilt of rushing my kids from place to place and being so exhausted when there is down time that I can't even parent the way I want to. (Im sure many can relate) Lacking in patience and kindness and going to bed feeling like I've failed them. It's hard. Everyday.

It's stolen my ability to give my children experiences. The cost of admission to things like zoos, museums, aquariums, etc, even going to the fair, is astronomical and there's only 4 people in my family. Don't even get me started on taking a trip to Disney.

It's gotten so bad, people don't even drive the speed limit. Our kids can't even ride bikes or cross streets. I worry about the power grid, water, having enough food. Never mind our poor schools.... I could go on.

I wasn't prepared for my 4 year olds picky tastes being a trigger because of food costs. I used to be much better at encouraging him to try new things. Now he simply can't eat if he won't eat what I can afford. I hate explaining money to my child this young. It's just so early.

Hear me out. Your joy, your calmness IS what the world needs. Teaching your children matriarchal ways is a form of resistance. We can’t do anything but vote, our worry and angst won’t do a thing, but we CAN smile, raise good children and experience joy doing so.
