@thinkbiggertv: Boston Must Keep This Neighborhood Wet Boston’s Back Bay has a strange problem: the neighborhood needs to stay wet. Thousands of historic Boston buildings were built on wooden pilings driven into the ground more than a century ago. As long as those pilings remain submerged in groundwater, the lack of oxygen helps protect the wood from decay. But when groundwater levels fall and the pilings are exposed to air, those foundations can begin to deteriorate, potentially causing buildings to settle and creating extremely expensive repairs. That’s why the Boston Groundwater Trust monitors hundreds of wells across the city and why groundwater recharge has become so important in parts of Boston.
