The answer is both...among others who were considered to be a threat to those in power.⁣ ⁣ The European witch craze occurred during an extremely unstable period of history, following in the wake of climate change, disease, food scarcity, economic downturn, and religious conflict.⁣ ⁣ People were afraid, and angry.⁣ ⁣ The "witches" who were persecuted during the Burning Times weren't the villains of this era — they were the scapegoats.⁣ ⁣ The trials gave the public someone to blame, and served as a distraction from what was taking place among the ruling class.⁣ ⁣ Seers, healers, herbalists, midwives, young women, widows, gay men, pagans, Jews, the unhoused, people with mental and physical disabilities, people who rioted and spoke out...⁣ ⁣ These were people who already existed on the fringes, who were mistrusted and mistreated.⁣ ⁣ Witch hunting propaganda incited fear and hysteria, and these folks on the fringes became the ideal scapegoats.⁣ ⁣ The witch craze enabled the ruling class to kill two birds with one stone:⁣ ⁣ The public was provided with a target, an outlet for their fear and anger (as well as an incentive for staying in line, lest they become the next targets).⁣ ⁣ The witches, women, and other outsiders were punished and stripped of what little power they had.⁣ ⁣ This history, though painful to remember, holds vital lessons for us today. ⁣ ⁣ We must always ask: Who are the scapegoats of our era? Who are those in power working to vilify, punish, and disempower?
