They captured the village early. Ahead of schedule. Their own soldiers were now standing inside the exact town about to be bombed by their own air force. Radios failed. There was no way to reach headquarters in time to call off the strike. With minutes left, they had one option. A pigeon. Trained for exactly this. A bird named G.I. Joe. He was released, carrying a single handwritten message, and flew 20 miles in 20 minutes, weaving through gunfire and enemy territory the entire way. He reached the airbase just as the bombers were preparing to take off. The mission was called off, seconds before it was too late. Over 100 Allied soldiers, standing inside that village, were saved by one bird. Years later, G.I. Joe received a medal for gallantry, the highest military honor ever given to an animal.
