@teatyranny: 江湖 means "rivers and lakes" — but no English word fully covers it. It started with Zhuangzi's fish, became where Fan Li vanished to escape the court, then the taverns and back-alleys of Tang poetry, then the outlaw society of Water Margin — and today it's the closest thing China has to "the streets" or "the game." What's a word in your language that shifted this much? #china #chinesehistory #jianghu #wuxia #language #learnchinese #chineseculture #History
As an American Chinese it’s basically “the streets” for back then LMAO

Lmao me and my Chinese friend play this Chinese Martial Arts game called “Where Winds Meet” and he said “The Jianghu is Settled we pay taxes now” it always stuck with me because my interpretation of that is “The rivers and lakes are now cities and towns and the wanderers have ended their journeys” 😂🙏

this sounds like it's related to "liminal spaces" that are popular on the internet these days. sort of a Chinese "backrooms" of sorts.

Most of my knowledge on this word comes from wuxia only so I don’t think I have the best understanding so I mostly think of it as “out there” as in the vast world ( as dangerous and beautiful as it can be)😭

a little bit of accidental parallelism to Nate Silver's The River (describing a mindset/social group by a poker metaphor)

Jianghu is a way of life rather than a place. I admit most of what I "know" is because of Where Winds Meet and the movies 😅 but I love the game also shows us antiques kept in the Museums and tries to teach us history as well.

It's more like a vibe, you can't fully explain it in words.

I feel like the earlier transcriptions refer to someone as a hermit, later thoguh I feel like the meaning goes too many ways

I know 江湖 as a calligraphy style that doesn’t follow the traditional 5 calligraphy styles 五体. The connotation seems to be negative, I don’t know why

Outlaws , iconoclasts and mavericks , the shadow world operating on the margins of the formal imperial bureaucratic social structure. Would that not be described as jianghu?
