City of San Jose Animal Care & Services Chive came from a suspected hoarding/unethical breeding situation with 15 other dogs. He arrived at the shelter afraid of people, unable to walk on a leash and frightened by quick movements. It was clear he had never learned how to be a pet. Little by little, Chive learned to leave his kennel, walk on leash and trust people. He has done well with full-body handling and has also done well with other dogs. He joined a small dog playgroup and had a great time. Then a volunteer took him on an outing. Getting into a car was new. The park was new. Bikes were scary. But after watching several go by, something happened: his fear began turning into curiosity. Chive watched. He learned. He adjusted. Yet Chive is now on the euthanasia list because of severe fear, anxiety and stress in the shelter, including defensive behavior during some kennel interactions. The shelter itself acknowledges that his behavior is strongly influenced by stress and arousal in the shelter environment. We want Chive to have the opportunity to succeed outside the shelter. Look how much he has already learned when someone took the time to show him something different. Help save Chive.
