I was reading a Greek mythology fantasy book and the FMC was in the underworld talking to hades and she randomly tells him “I saw a hack on TikTok on how to open a pomegranate” I wanted to throw my book across the room.

My book is isekai and the main character is a teenager from 2026 and now in a fantasy world. She has to explain who Jesus Christ is, what the bible is, and what christianity is on like five different occasions and ends up teaching a king to play dungeons and dragons because she made a reference to rolling a dice for charisma 😭

cringey pet names that do not fit with the story. My biggest issue I have is when the fantasy world doesnt reflect the location description times...like the characters having cell phones but the city is still in medieval cobblestone road times....I will DNF a book so hard!!

I disagree about the slang. Fantasy isn’t always old time or a separate language. Idc about that as long as it’s not ridiculous terms only the Gen Z uses. The signing sends me. It’s why I haven’t read Off Campus. The things I’ve seen from the show of her singing on the box while he’s on ice is so cringy I think it would ruin it for me lol

Honestly I read a book about performers and the writing the song bits were great because it's just a character talking to themselves and figuring out their feelings. Them performing the song and the FULL LYRICS being put in the book... ick

I’m a bit on the fence about modern phrasing. Like not all fantasy is medieval and needs to read that way, but if something is very 2020’s specific it does pull me out of the story. Like in fourth wing, I think it’s the first chapter Violet says, “double standards for the win.” That pulled me out of it a bit, even though it’s a more modern setting than say game of thrones.

Can not stand during a spicy scene in a book the author giving the character some complicated issues she’s/he’s thinking and going over in her / his mind… like yeah no I’m pretty such they aren’t thing THAT much about that stuff while in the throws of a passionate moment that has been building for 17 chapters!!!!! I skip over that it’s distracting and out of place and not realistic. That and I can NOT stand misunderstand tropes!!!! So over done and frustrating
