💜 I just got back from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Aruba, and it got me thinking: the way you approach travel can be the difference between a true impact on your life or letting it all pass by. So here are 5 things I never want to forget to do when I travel: 1️⃣ Do as the locals do There are so many tourist traps, and those can be fun. But some of the best memories I have are times when we asked where locals prefer to go. In Saint Lucia, my husband and I asked our waterfall tour guide where he went for lunch. He gave us the name of a tiny restaurant in town on the second floor of a building. We would have never found it ourselves, but we had the most amazing meal. And we discovered a hot sauce made on the island that we enjoyed so much, we still order it at home today. 2️⃣ Use ChatGPT to find hidden gems Recently, I've been asking AI to help me plan vacations, and it always provides amazing places to stay and eat and visit that I would have never found on my own. In Saint Lucia, I stayed at the Tet Rouge, a tiny 10-room resort per its recommendation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ outta 5 stars In Aruba, it suggested I eat at Bistro de Suikertuin in downtown Oranjestad. I LOVED this building. Built more than 100 years ago, it was completely made of stone with the best ambiance and delicious food. 3️⃣ Ask for recommendations If you are going somewhere, and you know someone who has been before, ask them: 'What's one thing I can't miss?

A business partner told me her unforgettable moment in Aruba was a submarine tour. So I got to take my family on an actual submarine and experience the sea 130 feet below the surface. Literally so cool. 4️⃣ Take it in before you take a picture We are so adamant about wanting to preserve memories, that our instinct is to whip out or phones and take a picture. But I challenge you to first take it in with your eyes, your breath, your heart. The images will stick so much longer than if you experience it through a 5x3 inch screen. In fact, research suggests constantly documenting our lives can change how we remember them. In one study, people who photographed objects during a museum tour later remembered fewer objects and fewer details than people who simply observed them. Researchers called it the “photo-taking-impairment effect.” In other words, sometimes trying to capture the moment can get in the way of actually remembering it. Once the experience is cemented in your mind, only then should you take out your phone. 5️⃣ Don't make it about content I know we all need content to fuel our online lives, and I realize this point is kinda meta. But if you make your vacation about gaining content, you will miss out on actually enjoying your vacation. Take a few photos of moments you will actually want to revisit, but do not make your vacation a full-on photoshoot. Live your life, you only get one. 📣 Btw, this doesn’t need to be an epic Caribbean vacation. Next year I plan to drive one state over and follow these same rules.
