@user6907251749498: “I’ve bled brakes on my car before. How hard could a bike be?” I’ve heard this countless times working in bike shops. And honestly, I get it. The basic concept is the same. But the bike industry is a bit of a shit show when it comes to brake bleeding procedures. 😂 It doesn’t matter if you’ve bled the brakes on a motorcycle, a race car, or the International Space Station. If you’re not familiar with that specific brake, it’s surprisingly easy to miss one small step that leaves you stuck in an endless cycle of trying to get the lever to feel right. If you’re going to bleed your own brakes, look up the service procedure for that exact brake. Know what fluid it uses, what the manufacturer recommends, and—just as importantly—what not to do. But there’s one thing you won’t find in a PDF: Experience. I’ve bled a lot of brakes over the years, and I’ve learned little tricks from other mechanics, engineers, and manufacturers that you simply pick up from doing the job over and over again. Knowing where air likes to hide, recognizing when something doesn’t feel right, and knowing when to go beyond the basic procedure are things that only come with experience. That’s why I don’t rely on experience alone. I combine it with the manufacturer’s procedure and the knowledge I’ve gained over the years. Because knowing how to bleed a brake is one thing. Knowing how to properly bleed that brake is another.
