@anthonypillarella: Replying to @colbeyharlan There are also techniques that can be helpful (building social momentum and the 3 second rule, for example), but shifting my mindset and actually addressing the anxiety has made the biggest difference here. #charisma #socialskills #makingfriends #datingadvice #socialanxiety
Rejection hurts far more than it should when you let it be a confirmation of your feelings of worthlessness rather than what it is: this person saying "no" at this moment.

What do you do if you’re really ugly? I find that a majority of interactions just boil down to attractiveness, even if it’s just to find friends. I have a friend group now but it took a long time to get to this point and even then finding anybody outside that group seems to be quite a task.

Fear of acceptance was a real thing I dealt with. In my mind, I was already struggling to manage my job and current friend group and thought I didn’t have the time or energy to be a “good enough” friend to new people. The bar is a lot lower than I was holding myself to, just messaging friends and hanging out with them when I have the time was enough.

I am so glad you mentioned the fear of acceptance, and i'd like to add to it:
the fear of accepting a person who, later on, reveals themselves to be bad for you. poor boundaries, not wanting to hurt them (and other people pleasing behaviors), sunk cost fallacy, etc. are something i'm concerned about.
.
I feel like i'm much better at boundaries, unlearning my people pleasing, and i'm happy with where I am so losing someone new just puts me back where i'm already happy, but those aspects have not been truly tested yet, so the unknown is the root of the anxiety.

also join clubs and go to social places! if you're in a place that people already expect to meet new people they're more likely to be open to getting past awkwardness, one of the best things that came out of being a part of the Youth Advisery Board for me was that after a month or two you get used to just walking into a room of people in your age range that you might not have even met before but are good friends with by the end of the two hours the club runs per session
