@daniellegrobman: How long is too long for Sobremesa? My capitalistic American brain could just not be comprehending this… but how did the numbers work? How are you able to have so many people getting next to nothing (when you take into consideration the cost for all the food, prep, work, keeping the lights on, air-conditioning, etc) and still be able to run a profitable business? was I the bad guy here or is this how the system works and I am not seeing something? #spanishculture #hospitality #madrid #cafeculture #sobremesa
Luckily tipping culture is only an American thing and the servers get an hourly wage that’s livable.

It’s really not that deep. If it’s at a cafe it’s mostly okay. In a busy restaurant maybe limit it to ten/fifteen minutes because they might have the table booked for a little later.

Because while you're there yapping, you order some more drinks, or maybe a bit more food, or you use the bathrooms, or you actually have lunch, or merienda since you're at it… and turns out you've been 9 hours and you all have ended up spending 100€ each one. That's why sobremesa still works for everyone

The sobremesa lasts as long as the people around the mesa want it to last

If you see people waiting to have a table to be served, then, be polite and don’t make owners lose money

you're at an açai and overpriced coffee place in Centro. That's not a place for sobremesa.... it's a place to stop after you've posted about "the vibe" at Honest Greens

20€?. Where the bloody hell did you have that coffee? And what was it made of? Did they import the beans directly from Colombia, from Ethiopia or Indonesia and roastand grind the coffee themselves? Did they milk the cows themselves? And you still wonder if they're making money? You haven't been in Spain long enough, you still think in American 😆.
