@kinderwell2: Kids spend six to seven hours a day sitting still at school, and that's precisely why afternoons often become challenging. By pick-up time, a child's brain has been working hard to follow instructions, sit still, manage emotions, and wait their turn. By 3 PM, that system is running on empty. What happens in the next two hours can determine whether the evening is smooth or a disaster. There are four things that genuinely help, and three common parental actions that, without realizing it, can make things worse. **Four Things That Help:** 1. **Fifteen Silent Minutes After Pick-up:** No "how was school?" or "did you eat lunch?" Just a snack, low or no music, and quiet. A depleted brain can't process questions yet. Typically, after about twenty minutes, most kids will start talking on their own once the pressure is gone. 2. **Real Movement:** Get outside if possible—the yard, a walk, a bike ride, or a trampoline. Not a screen. Their bodies have been in a chair all day and need a physical release. Thirty minutes of movement can prevent many classic 5 PM meltdowns. 3. **Real Food and Water:** Not just a token snack. Blood sugar and dehydration are often the real issues. Provide something substantial, beyond just a cookie or a piece of fruit, along with water, as kids drink far less at school than at home. 4. **No Questions Until Dinner:** The brain doesn't fully come back online for about ninety minutes after school. Save questions for later, and you'll likely get dramatically better answers. **Three Things That Quietly Block Progress (and feel like good parenting):** * **Interrogating at Pick-up:** Even with loving intent, this adds demand to an already depleted system and usually just gets you a "fine." * **Immediate Homework:** Assigning homework the second they walk in turns a ten-minute task at 4:30 PM into a fight at 3:15 PM. * **Screens:** They don't decompress; they merely mask what's underneath. This is why meltdowns often appear two hours later, bigger than before. It's surprising how these blockers often feel like good parenting in the moment. Asking about their day feels caring, getting homework done feels responsible, and a tablet feels like a break. Families who try this "reset" for just two weeks, instead of using the blockers, often see the 5 PM meltdown drop by 70 to 80 percent. This isn't because the child changed, but because their nervous system finally received what it truly needed. Try it for even one week and observe the positive shifts. #ParentingTips #AfterSchoolRoutine #KidsWellbeing #MeltdownPrevention #ChildDevelopment

I don’t think 15 mins of silence is any good at all. How you supposed to do that when they want to talk and laugh with you?! Nope!

In france, schools finish at 4:30pm plus they have homework for the next day. By the time i pick up my son and arrive home it is already 5pm. He should be in bed around 9pm maximum. Imagin the stress and pressure, both me and my son face every day from 5pm to 9pm. Feeding, showering, doing homework it is crazy and extremely exhausting.

good God. you are not getting it. let your kid dictate is what is being said. if they want quiet. if they want to laugh and joke, great! just don't force it or feel dejected if you don't get an immediate response. that's all it's saying...

If possible we do dinner immediately after school instead of a snack and he bikes home, it is literally the secret code in our house. Winter is where we always get stuck in a funk.
