If I remember correctly after the first death the mother was in therapy and the therapist encouraged her to leave the second child with the mother because the first time was an accident.

my MIL took my son riding without a car seat when he was 4 and didn't tell me because she knew I'd "freak out". Long story short, she doesn't take them anywhere anymore.
