Yes, exactly! You gotta show who you are when you reach out to anyone. I’ve only had one person not reply so far this year (also reaching out to geoscience folks). Everyone has been beyond kind and helpful. They’ve shared so much info or have recommended other professors to reach out to if they think someone might be a better fit. All this information, even if they’re not taking students right now. Even hopping on zoom at times. It’s been refreshing how kind they’ve all been. But also: hard agree on reading their website in advance. I always try to read some of their papers as well because it’s seeking a compatibility fit that cuts both ways so if their research isn’t up your alley, they might not be the best fit etc. :)

I did this exact thing last spring and out of 20 professors I contacted, maybe 2 or 3 didn't get back to me. A lot of them said that they'd love for me to contact them again the next semester or they would tell me other professors they know in a similar field as me. I had one professor send me an email she was sent about an application that was just sent out that morning! I ended up finding a professor who actually had funding and she was excited about me joining her lab since I was super passionate about my work I've been doing and what I am wanting to do in the future! I know rn funding is awful but there will be the one professor out there looking for a new student :)

This is kind of specific but should you email multiple members of the lab? Or should you only be emailing the lab head? (Ex some labs I’ve seen have associate researchers/multiple grad students doing individual projects)
