President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that 5,500 new police officers will soon enter training academies as part of the government’s plan to add 11,000 new constables to the South African Police Service. On paper, this sounds like good news. More police officers could mean more capacity to respond to crime, investigate cases and protect communities. 👮🏾‍♂️🚨 But there is a much bigger issue facing SAPS… TRUST. The announcement comes as the Madlanga Commission exposes allegations of corruption and political interference within parts of South Africa’s criminal justice system. Ramaphosa himself acknowledged that there is a major “challenge of confidence” in the police. And the statistics are worrying. 😳 Stats SA’s 2025/26 Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey found that more than half of some reported crime incidents go unreported. In cases such as street muggings, more than half are reportedly not brought to the police. And one of the main reasons? People believe the police simply won’t do anything about it. 😔 That means South Africa doesn't just need MORE police. We need EFFECTIVE police. We need officers who are properly trained, properly equipped and properly held accountable. 👮🏾‍♀️⚖️ Ramaphosa says the majority of SAPS members serve with honour and integrity and that the actions of a corrupt few should not define thousands of honest officers. But for ordinary South Africans, the real test will be simple: When you call the police, will someone answer? When you report a crime, will something actually happen? And if an officer abuses their power, will there be real consequences? The President says where wrongdoing is established, there must be consequences and that the law must take its course.
