I grew up in central Illinois where there were rumors of a panther. Never believed it till my brother and I actually saw it. But it was too small to be a jaguar but to big to be just a house cat. Seemed to be the size of a large dog. If not a melanistic cougar, would it have just been a juvenile jaguar/panther?

My family and i saw a huge black cat at my dad’s ranch in northern mexico as a kid. It looked just like a mountain lion. We never saw it again after that. Mountain lions were common around the area..

There were either 2 or 3 that were captive in Kentucky that got loose in the last 15 years. They have been spotted but as of 2026 nobody knows if they’re still alive
