My Scott in the second grade told me about Star Trek. I flipped on the TV that Friday night to watch the credits for the last airing on NBC. The following year, it went into syndication in LA on KCOP at 6pm M-F

I watched Star Trek in 1973 when I was in 3rd grade. So for many many years the original series was all there was. Met my wife because of a Con that had Grace Lee as a guest. In about a week we will have been married 37 years. No one introduced me to Trek.

The Foxter :
@The Foxter: I’m older than Q, so watched TOS when it first aired in the UK, if memory serves it was on a Wednesday evening on BBC1, when I’d race home from swimming practise to catch what was left of which ever episode was on. But it was on a plane returning from an LA holiday that I noticed a certain Patrick Stewart waiting at the central toilet. TNG hadn’t even aired in the UK and had been only available from videos at Blockbuster, 2 episodes at a time. As I was reading a Trek novel at the time, it seemed too good an opportunity to sheepishly approach him and ask for an autograph, which he gave, and I still have!

I didn't know why I liked Star Trek growing up. I just did. Then one day I was going through some old photos and found one of 4 year old me sitting on my grandfather's lap watching The Original Series episode Amok Time, and then it all made sense.

I am a big Star Trek fan, and I am a Next Gen guy. I've met Patrick Stewart, for about 2 seconds. but I will tell you the tale of how I became a Trekkie.... Are you sitting comfortably?... it was on before The Simpsons. amazing!

I loved your story Ellie! Thank you for sharing. To me, I kinda fell into being a Star Trek fan. I watched the 2008 Chris Pine Star Trek movie just because I think it was on Film4 one night. With no other context to it, I thought it was just very okay, so didn’t really dive into more Trek stuff for many more years after that. I then saw that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was coming out and I saw it was about Captain Pike. I thought back to 2008 Star Trek and remembered that was a character in that movie so I thought, that’s a cool concept, I’ll check it out. The minute Pike finished his speech about war in episode 1, I completely fell into love with the franchise. I finally GOT IT. I understood why so many people loved this franchise. But much like you, I also fell in love with Star Trek because of the found family dynamic of the crew. And I adore that dynamic on Strange New Worlds. For various reasons, I’m not on speaking terms with anyone in my immediate family. So I think I’ve always gravitated to found family stories as a way of feeling something that I don’t get from a traditional family unit. My friends are my family, and I was lucky enough to introduce my two best friends to Strange New Worlds too. One of them is very anti-sci-fi so it took some convincing. But they too, fell in love with it almost instantaneously. And I love when the series is airing new episodes, that we hop on a discord call and share theories, what we liked, what we didn’t like etc. much like you guys do at TrekCulture! Those friends of mine who now adore Strange New Worlds have said they love the found family dynamic as much as I do. I’m forever blown away that the found family dynamic of this 60 year old TV show, continues to strengthen the foundation family dynamic that I have with my closest friends. Since discovering Strange New Worlds, the words of Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Enterprise have truly guided me through some dark times over recent years. It’s helped me understand my own neurodivergence, and has set me straight at times when my head has been so noisy. I’ve gone back to watch The Next Generation and Lower Decks too. Star Trek makes my life better every day.
