@cbsatlanta: The former director of special education for the Greene County Board of Education and her husband have been arrested after being accused of stealing around $50,000 in grant funds, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says. GBI agents arrested 52-year-old Kimberley Kerchelle Simmons and 58-year-old Eric Geroy Simmons last week following an investigation requested by the Greene County Sheriff's Office. Investigators believe the couple were involved in the theft. The school district said Simmons was placed on administrative leave and resigned Sept. 2 after an internal audit found evidence of misuse of funds. Kimberley Simmons is charged with theft by taking and false statements, while her husband faces a theft by taking charge. Both were booked into the Greene County Jail. The school district said it takes the safeguarding of public funds seriously and will continue cooperating with law enforcement. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are asking anyone with information to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Milledgeville or the agency's tip line.
