On the right stands the Windmill Theatre, and its sign reads WE NEVER CLOSED. Apart from the compulsory shutdown of all London theatres in September 1939, it kept performing right through the war. During the worst of the Blitz the showgirls, cast and crew moved into the theatre’s two underground floors and went back on stage the next day. Everyone here walks past it without a glance.
