Speaking as a Kansas City MO native, they're actually separate cities entirely. I'm not sure where some of the people here get the idea that it's all one city, just because the two share a name. They have different mayors and different policies. The fact that they had an issue with the liquor license alone is a hint that it's two separate cities, because it would be a logistical nightmare to have one city with one mayor, but straddling two different states with different laws and governors. KCMO was developed first, and KCK was developed later as a completely separate municipality. The MO city predates the Kansas one by about 25 years.

KC residence on both sides of the border are reading way too much into this. Kansas City, Kansas isn’t 200 miles inside of Kansas, it’s right there on the border so when you look at a map, it’s all one big blob, that’s what he’s meaning. He’s talking about the blob that makes up the whole KC area, not that two cities on two different sides of a border function under a singular government or anything like that LOL

if you say Kansas City, we will assume you’re talking about anything on the Missouri side from North KC down to about Loch Lloyd and east to Independence. If you’re talking about the KS side, you don’t say Kansas City, you say KCK OR the specific town/neighborhood area.

there was a bar in the west bottoms in KC built directly on the state line. there was a line painted on the floor and the bartenders had a lever they could flip to slide the liquor from one side to the other, because during prohibition, if they got raided by one state, they just slid it all over to the other state and all the customers stepped over the line to safety
