I kept hearing about efficiency, productivity, and how entrepreneurs can compete with tools that once belonged only to giant companies. Then I started posting about AI and saw a very different conversation in the comments. His point is uncomfortable: it is easy to celebrate a technology when someone else absorbs the infrastructure, energy, and environmental burden. The debate changes when the data center is in your backyard. And if the most powerful tools appear free, we should still ask what we are contributing through our data, attention, and dependence. Innovation can create enormous opportunity. That does not make its costs imaginary. Are AI data centers a necessary price of progress, or are communities being asked to carry too much of the burden?
