Tag @aravindsrinivas to see it 👇 Aravind Srinivas has bid $34.5 billion for Chrome, bid for TikTok, and picked a public fight with Elon Musk. He expected to own none of them. That is what you do when your competitor can outspend you forever. Google can spend more on advertising in a year than Perplexity is worth, so Srinivas never competes on spend. He finds ways to get the distribution and attention that money normally buys. Airtel gave Perplexity to 360 million Indians for free, which brought 56 million downloads in seven months with no ad spend, and 25 more networks followed. The Chrome bid is the purest version of the same move. Chrome is worth more than his whole company, and he knew Google would never sell it. Google never replied, every newspaper on earth printed his name, and a month later Perplexity was valued at $20 billion. The bid got him more coverage than any campaign could have bought. He learned to think this way inside the companies he now competes with. He had worked at OpenAI and DeepMind and knew the models themselves would become a commodity, so the only things a small company could win on were speed and attention. Perplexity already existed as a tool that turned plain questions into database searches, so when ChatGPT launched they pointed it at the web and shipped in seven days. Perplexity now handles 780 million queries a month and makes over $450 million a year. Follow @theventure for the greatest founder stories ever told. @Aravind Sri Nivas @Perplexity
