@nytimes: As traditional sports governing bodies scramble to attract younger, screen-obsessed audiences, virtual Taekwondo is making its debut at this year’s Asian Games. Taekwondo’s governing body hailed the virtual competition as a new frontier for the martial art. #taekwondo #VR
As cool as this is, this isn’t a sport, it’s just kicking simulator from what I can see. Do the players even have to care what the opponent is doing?

Cool hypothetically. Bad, because all you do is spam kick so defense goes out the window. And for viewers, it looks silly.

I’m excited to see where this is going. A lot of people avoid combat sports for fear of injury and brain damage. I can see this getting more people active, even if only on a fitness level.

Hey New York times I'm having trouble finding anything about trump falling asleep constantly. You all wrote 100s of stories about Bidens age and not a peep since June about trump.

One of the many reasons you train in a martial art is to prepare yourself for an actual "physical" altercation. This looks more like parents being too over protective of their child being hit. You need physical contact to be real in order for it to be used correctly and safe.

safer sure, but no real anything. they don't appear to need to block and even in a regular video game you get penalized for getting hit by not being able to strike back

Strange. How does the health bar deplete? Taekwondo scoring is typically based on number of hits rather than an actual fight. I guess this way can eliminate the rampant corruption but there is a level of intimidation when it comes to actually being in danger of getting hit, stamina drain when you are really hit, etc.

this is just useless.... real sparring moves can get your opponent off balance. No threat of a hit, it's a video game, so I guess sparring is now elan e sport lol
