Sounds like a garage policy- they can only be written if you aren’t driving it. You see it with like classic cars in the winter months a lot

As a FL agent, I won’t write less than 50/100, and if they want less, I make them sign something saying I advised you to get higher coverage. No games round here partner!

They either have a storage policy, or there’s a need for an E&O claim

I seem to remember State Farm used to write “garage” policies for a car that isn’t being driven. But I can’t understand why it would have collision because it would not be needed if you were not driving. That’s nuts!

If there is state mandated liability coverage, and his carrier didn’t sell it, he needs to file a complaint with the Department of insurance because that is bad faith and unfair and deceptive all day

The policy was probably listed as storage vehicle not a drivable car

As a former insurance agent, the only state I was aware of that allows that is Florida.

They may have had a storage policy. When I worked at USAA they would write policies like that but we STRESSED since this vehicle is not supposed to be driven, there is no liability coverage provided.

If they were as dedicated to calling THEIR insurance as they are to NOT listening to the information they're being given they may have an answer by now. I didn't know it was possible to have a policy without liability. I learn something new everyday

usually it is either because the owner says the vehicle is going into storage or sitting at a dealership to be sold. on a rare occasion a sales rep who doesnt know what they are doing gets told by the customer they want it to be as cheap as possible.

If that other company messed up his insurance, then I would force them to pay.

I guarantee you the person on the phone told them I don’t care. I only want coverage for my car not for liability. I knew somebody who did this because they said they didn’t care about the other person’s vehicle and they wouldn’t get an accident and then they got an accident and they tried to make another fault even though it was their fault but they didn’t have coverage and now I would a significant amount of money to the person that they hit

Some insurance companies will give you the option to only carry 1st party coverages as part of a divisible policy. Insurance companies have no requirement to uphold a driver’s responsibility to carry legal liability insurance. They probably asked their agent to cover their car but save money any way possible.
