I always think of the “man vs. bear” thing in this way when people don’t get it. If you were out in the woods in a cabin and there was a bear outside you’re all good, just don’t go outside. If you were out in the woods in a cabin and there was a man outside, you’d be horrified; you aren’t safe.

The man vs bear question always makes me think of my salmon fishing trip in Alaska.. We were surrounded by massive brown bears within 10ft of us, at least 20 of them. This was right before their hibernation period when they experience hyperphagia & can be more aggressive too. We were constantly reeling in giant salmon right next to these apex predators. Not a single one of those bears paid us any mind, they didn't even try to take our catch. But every single person I spoke to gave me a warning about the men or told me a horror story about something a man did to a woman or child in the area & how many unsolved SA/murder cases there were. That's what they told me I should fear in Alaska, the men. And the only time I was in fear for myself there is when I'd notice a man staring at me and the predatory look in his eyes. I choose the bear.

The town would celebrate you for out running the bear is SO real!! That hits home! Also, if the bear killed you at least you’d get justice, they’d put the bear down for fear it would attack someone else. Nobody would let the bear off because they don’t want to ruin its “bright future”.
