@rewildingeurope: This summer alone, more than 600,000 hectares have burned across the EU. As climate extremes intensify, we also need to invest in landscapes that can better withstand them. Rewilding can help by restoring natural processes that retain water, shape vegetation and support healthier ecosystems. 💧 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 peatlands and wetlands helps landscapes hold water and stay wetter during dry periods. The Rewilding Affric Highlands team is restoring degraded peatlands in the Affric Highlands. 🐴 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 by wild horses, Tauros, deer and other herbivores creates a more varied vegetation mosaic, helping reduce the build-up of fuel for wildfires across the Greater Côa Valley and Iberian Highlands with Rewilding Portugal and Fundación Española de Renaturalización-Rewilding Spain. 🌳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 can create more diverse woodlands that are better able to withstand drought and wildfire, as Rewilding France is supporting in the Dauphiné Alps. Rewilding is not a substitute for firefighters or other fire prevention measures. It is about restoring natural processes so ecosystems can function more effectively, with less reliance on continuous human intervention. As Europe prepares its National Restoration Plans, there is an opportunity to make these approaches part of how we prepare for a changing climate.
