it is North African specifically Egypt is the reason that we have the watermelon that we have today. before the white rine encompassed most of the fruit making it not so tasty, thus it was used much like a canteen where they would open it up smash the inside to a thin pulp/liquid and then they'd drink to stay hydrated in the desert. wasn't until an Egyptian man started breeding the watermelons and only keeping the seeds of the watermelons that produced sweeter and more palatable flesh that is how we have the watermelons we have today.
