@nbcsouthflorida: A safety system that can help stop planes that veer off the runway isn't installed at Miami International Airport. The Engineered Material Arresting System is a runway safety area for aircraft that undershoot, overrun or veer off the runway. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, EMAS use crushable material at the end of a runway to help stop an aircraft. The tires of the aircraft sink into the lightweight material and the aircraft rapidly decelerates as it rolls through the EMAS bed. It's unknown whether an EMAS at MIA would have helped in Sunday's crash of an Amazon cargo plane at the airport that killed five people and left five others hurt. #CRASH #MIA #AMAZON

Most airports dont have EMAS. Instead, theres a “CLEARWAY” of long flat grass for 1000 feet off the end of the runway. Also, EMAS doesnt work when you fly over the top of it at Vr.

Ah yes, EMAS is not stopping a 767 at 100 knots. Waste of a story.

So lets blame the airport but not the pilot that landed nose first... As thats a big no no for planes. Then they struggled to get it down cause all the weight in the cargo area was preventing it to maintain on the pavement

The runway is at Miami national are plenty Long. If you remember back in the day, the Concorde used to land in there. That was 100% pilot error and had nothing to do with the runway. Why install something that’s not needed.

Only 13% of airports in the us have the system and emas wouldn’t work at the speed they attempted the landing at

would not make a difference in this overrun also it cuts down on usable runway for take off at many airports that have shorter runways. most planes need longer runs to take off when full of fuel and ppl and will back taxi this area to have enough room for a safety margin on take off.
