@ganymede.station: Operation Mockingbird was a covert CIA program beginning in the early 1950s under the direction of Frank Wisner, designed to infiltrate and influence American media by recruiting journalists, editors, and executives at major news organizations to shape public opinion and distribute intelligence approved narratives as legitimate news. Declassified documents and congressional testimony from the 1975 Church Committee hearings confirmed the CIA had relationships with over 400 American journalists who knowingly or unknowingly published agency approved stories, planted disinformation, and suppressed reporting that conflicted with intelligence community interests. Some of the most prominent news organizations in the country, including major wire services and television networks, had documented relationships with intelligence officials during this period, with the agency reportedly maintaining assets inside newsrooms specifically to control the framing of stories related to foreign policy, domestic unrest, and CIA operations abroad. What makes Operation Mockingbird more than historical trivia is that its exposure was accidental and partial, the Church Committee only scratched the surface of documented relationships before political pressure ended the investigation, and researchers have long argued that a program built to disappear the moment it was formally acknowledged did not simply cease to exist the day Congress closed its hearing. #conspiracytheory #conspiracytheories #operationmockingbird
