@interesting.every6: Centralia, Pennsylvania has been burning underground for more than 60 years. The Centralia mine fire began in 1962 after a fire spread into abandoned coal mines beneath the town. Once the underground coal caught fire, the flames began moving through old mine tunnels and coal seams beneath streets, houses, and buildings. Over time, residents began seeing smoke rising from cracks in the ground, roads started buckling, dangerous gases entered buildings, and sinkholes began appearing. In 1981, a 12-year-old boy nearly fell into a sinkhole when the ground suddenly collapsed beneath him. The incident became one of the most famous moments in the history of the Centralia mine fire. Eventually, the government paid most residents to relocate and hundreds of buildings were demolished. What had once been a Pennsylvania mining town became almost completely abandoned. But even after the people left and the town disappeared, the underground coal fire continued burning. Today, the Centralia underground mine fire is still active more than six decades after it began, and the coal beneath the area could allow parts of the fire to continue burning for generations. Centralia remains one of the strangest abandoned towns, ghost towns, mining disasters, and underground fires in American history. #Centralia #Pennsylvania #GhostTown #AbandonedPlaces #History #InterestingFacts #Noetivium
