The documentary “One Nation Under Dog” made me appreciate shelters and adoption. Watching mass gas chamber euthanasia is traumatizing stop breeding folks 👏

I saw a doodle surrendered due to over a dozen unprovoked bites and people were scrambling to find a rescue that would take him. For the life of me I can’t understand why everyone is fighting to keep aggressive dogs alive, save dogs like these!

Is there a reason you guys don’t have a matrix for making euthanasia decisions? This really subjective system leaves your government agency open to a large amount of scrutiny not to mention the zero interaction with the public regarding these decisions. In my area the public would not tolerate this type of system with little to no communication.

This makes me physically ill 😭 I understand why it has to be done, it’s just so heartbreaking for those poor babies, and for the shelter employees like you who have to make these decisions. My heart goes out to all of you ❤️🩹

I worked at a shelter and I had to euthanize the animals. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But honestly, I was glad I was the last person they got to see. I had nothing but love and respect for them and help them and kiss them in their last moments. The staff that works there before I came on was absolutely awful. Instead of getting mad at the shelter for euthanizing, you gotta get mad at the people that don’t spay and neuter their animals.

Just knowing you have to decide which of these sweet souls to let go while Braxxton and Aishleigh have their 2yo poodle mutt have her 3rd litter of "double doodles" must drive one crazy.
Take care of yourself, though I know you do

In this theoretical example, I fear your best bet would be whoever has been there the shortest stays, or the border collie. Unfortunately dogs who look more purebred tend to have an easier time. The border collie is recognizable to people. Of not the border collie than whoever has been there shortest kennel time and has the best chance at avoiding kennel stress

This is part of the reason I couldn’t work in vetmed anymore. Our clinic had a breeding program and medicine where they assisted breeders with their healthcare and while I’m glad the dogs had healthcare during their breedings, it made me so sad that 90% were doodles, bulldogs and frenchies that clearly were not very healthy. I did not assist with the breeding visits but I saw their health testing and it’s very sad. The amount of frenchies that had complications during birth is so so sad. If I had the time and room, I’d be taking so many rescues :/

So I think more people should show her respect for the job she does. This part of the job is hard. I took my mother in laws dog to be euthanized. He was 15 & lost the ability to walk in his hind end. I volunteered bc I had 0 emotional attachment to the dog. I also am not the biggest fan of dogs…however….when it came time to euthanize this dog..I was destabilized by the experience. It broke my heart. I cried. I hated it for the dog..but the vet confirmed there was nothing that could be done & especially at his age. It had to have been one of the sadder things I’ve experienced in life. I stayed with him the whole time, until the end.

Sadie lives. Merle is unfortunately a very popular colour. As much as people should adopt based on temperament, energy, etc, Sadie will be adopted in no time simply due to her coat colour and smaller size. 😞

That's so sad. I did so much research before getting my dog about training, potty training, socialization, cat socialization, and so much more and I haven't stopped researching since and it's been nearly 3 years maybe nearly 4 years. I know everything I can about dogs diets, activity, socialization with cats, body language, and more. I wish more people would care more about researching instead of assuming that dogs are just easy and get them for children as toys.

I wish I could adopt another dog. My shelter border collie passed away a couple years ago and my heart is ready to have another one. Unfortunately with the state of the country, inflation skyrocketing, housing accepting dogs less and less, I just can't get one, and I wonder if thats why less people are adopting. Pets just arent affordable anymore and these poor souls feel the punishment from it 🫤

people who blame shelters for this have no idea. you have no choice. it fucking hurts. it hurts worse then they think. we would never choose this, but it has to happen. they don’t stop coming, and they rarely go. so what are we supposed to do. something has to give.
