Who throws themselves a baby shower? That’s not how that works.

Who holds a baby shower during dinner hours?

SIL intentionally chose that date to start the drama in the first place.

If you plan something without asking about peoples availability then you can't be mad when they can't attend. A couple people couldn't come to my wedding and of course I was bummed but I would never get angry about it because people have lives and plans that does not revolve around me

It’s not mandatory to attend someone else’s event. If you already have plans, you already have plans.

For me, unless I know that the person intentionally planned the shower to mess up my anniversary, I would just move my dinner plans. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Bummer for sure but supporting family is always up for compromise.

I think op is the AH... you don't actually know how many kids you're going to have and this might be sil's only baby shower

I don’t think she’s the AH. She told the SIL that that is their anniversary. SIL decided it didn’t matter. Therefore she decided it wasn’t important enough for them to be there. They basically told her they wouldn’t. Having said that? If the husband really felt strongly about attending for an hour? I would have done it. It’s an hour, and then the night can proceed as planned.

Her husband isn’t “stuck in the middle” he’s actively choosing his sister.

why couldn't they have just gotten lunch for their anniversary instead of dinner and then gone to the baby shower late

nta because the Sil was rude AF when told and she planned it for herself like you can drop off a gift any day of the week. If someone told me it's their wedding anniversary I'd assume it's a no go showing up anyway

SIL did it on purpose. She wants to be the center of attention and she knows that it's their anniversary. Obviously, SIL has no friends or family, that's why she threw her own shower. SIL is the AH.

There’s no world in which OP is an asshole. She already had plans, let them know, and that was that. She’s not the one turning it into a spectacle and involving family. She didn’t say “no one can do anything on this day, it MY day” she just said she wasn’t gonna go. Tell the in-laws to go argue with a wall

NTA, they already had plans that day. My wedding was on a day my brother had signed up for a Spartan race so he couldn't make it. My fault for not checking first. Also, he met his now wife at that race so totally worked out!

One, I don’t know when other people’s anniversaries are. Two, you could’ve easily done both. Three, this was all made into a bigger mess than it ever should have been. If she’d already sent out invitations that’s understandable not wanting to reschedule. However she didn’t need to add the last part. Hubby was out in an awful position for sure.

Mrs Thunder I agree with you most of the time but the whole point is sister-in-law should absolutely know when her brothers wedding anniversary is I'm sure she attended the wedding. I have both of my siblings wedding anniversaries saved in my calendar my parents anniversary is memorized and ingrained into my brain since I lived in that house for 20 years of my life. She should have seen it on her calendar when she went to plan the party so I think she is the a****** and has something against her sister-in-law. So no I absolutely would not have attended.

Her anniversary clearly means a lot to her and she can spend it however she wants just like SIL could’ve chosen any other of the 365 days to have her shower. 😩😩
