Gardening organically comes with its challenges, but it is healthier for us & the planet 🌍 Here are some tips to help you get the best results! 🌱 Companion planting. Use plants to defend your vegetables: sacrificial plants can be used to tempt pests away from your veg while plants with a strong scent can be used to disguise the smells of other veg. Nasturtiums are brilliant sacrificial plants for attracting caterpillars and aphids away from beans and brassicas. Crops in the onion family have a strong scent, deterring pests from carrots, brassicas, tomatoes and peppers. There are many other companion plants out there too! 🌱 Feed the soil. Healthy soil which is rich in nutrients, and high in organic matter & beneficial soil life will give your plants the best start. Larger, stronger & healthier plants are more resilient to pest attacks and disease. 🌱 Crop rotation. Pests and diseases can build up in the soil, but the good news is pests & diseases tend to be specific to one group of plants (blight affects potatoes and tomatoes for example). Moving crops around from year to year breaks the cycle of disease and pests. 🌱 Encourage predators into your garden to feed on pests such as aphids, caterpillars and slugs. Making habitat for wildlife is the best way to bring them in: incorporate water into your garden to encourage beneficial wildlife such as amphibians, water spawning insects and into your garden. A little pond the size of a sink can have a huge impact. Planting a range of flowers will bring beneficial insects such as ladybirds and hoverflies. Flat topped flowers such as fennel and yarrow are excellent for this. Having an “untidy corner” with logs, sticks & leaves provides shelter for all these creatures, making them more likely to take up residence. 🌱 Take out insurance. Despite our best efforts, plants do get eaten & fail to thrive. Sowing a few extra seeds will ensure you have replacements if you lose a few plants! #organic #organicfood gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #selfsufficient #homestead #garden
