Probably as a result of a lot of these changes - particularly the worsening employee experience - there’s definitely been a decline in the staff quality at REI over recent years. When I would go as a kid, the employees were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They were outdoor experts. Within the last several years, though, they’ve shifted to basically just be generic service staff. That’s no shade on the employees at all, but when I ask specific questions, I no longer feel that I can really get a knowledgeable answer. The demographic has shifted from passionate outdoor lovers to people who just need a job.

Backcountry is a 1000x better than REI. I am a member because we have an REI here. REI needs to start selling fly fishing gear. Fly fishermen are the biggest conservationists in the world.

I think the return policy was unsustainable, so I can’t fault them on the changes they have made. The overall direction does seem to be more profit driven than customer experience, unfortunately.

I don't fault them for rolling back the return policy. I think one year is plenty of time. I am upset that they got rid of the adventures program, and if I had my way the entire board would be gone. there needs to be a blend between competency screening to run a large company and mission focused individuals. I miss the garage sales which they don't have anymore in favor of just putting them all in a section of the store so the time. on average they run about a 40% discount. it used to me a lot more, and they used to have an extra special event once a year with steeper discounts.

As someone who formerly worked at rei the union busting is a HUGE thing happening the second that a manager hears of union talk they have to report it to the board and are trying to constantly say that the unionized stores are terrible and are going to close eventually

Punishing people for using your return policy is ridiculous. Taking advantage yeah maybe but REI allowed it. You bought from REI and essentially bought that return policy. Banning people for using the return policy because they used it more than you wanted is on the company not the customer.

This is wild because MEC, the Canadian equivalent to REI, is more or less thriving now

Yeah, it's capitalism 100%. Capitalism can't help itself, it's built in to the mechanism. Exchange value, reinvest to achieve greater growth. REI, can't help itself, if they don't squeeze the the employees/ anti-union and consumers fiddle with the use-value then someone else will, and they'll go out of business. Capitals insatiable appetite will continue to make all our lives worse. It's baked into the system. I prefer to buy outdoor gear from small vendors but you have no idea what those small businesses values are? It's a mine field out there. The only solution is either eliminate capitalism or put a lid on it. Good video.

as a long time, REI member I feel like the people who use their gear for eight years and then returned it or the one that fucked us. For years, I would only buy shoes at REI cause if you wore them and they didn’t fit comfortably, you could still return them but wearing them for years and then returning them is just abuse of the policy. Anyways, cool content cheers mate.

I received a $23 pair of Darn Tough size medium socks from my child for Mother’s Day. Purchased at REI. I’m a large. I went to swap out the mediums, package still not opened, for a large. I have been a member since like 1995. I shop there frequently. My son did not use our code when he made his purchase and tossed the receipt. When I went to make the exchange the cashier made me feel like a criminal. Wouldn’t do the exchange without a receipt. For the same item. I hate REi.

If REI is going to act like Amazon, why should I pay more than Amazon prices?

As much as I am part of the outdoor community, I find that some people are elitists, and gatekeepers to information and knowledge of outdoor activities. They look down on beginners, short mileage hikers and call them walks. I wish that REI hadn’t go so corporate, but you can be sure it was these hard core outdoor members that were abusing the return policy to make it no longer possible.

I don’t know if there is a corporation out there that is all ‘good’. Just like people, nobody is ALL good. But REI must do better and pay their employees a living wage.

People weren’t abusing the policy. They were using the policy. REI didn’t call it abuse until they didn’t wanna use the policy anymore. Huge difference.

I’ve been on the trail, needed something, and REI took care of it without hassle. Having a company that understands is important. That never stopped.
