Why aren’t you saying anything about Asda? What’s the point of all this…? I’ve just been told off and told that, like everyone else, I’m expected to help out in other departments as well. I always do help out anyway, but that particular day I was doing something on my own department that hadn’t been done while I was on holiday.

It's because that manager wants to look good to his boss so he will tell them I've been able to cut costs and keep the same level of outcome for us hoping they get a bonus or pay rise

I had a similar thing happen. I work in the public sector and at the time government was cutting funding so managers were being asked to look at reducing their headcounts. We had two employees leave and my manager at the time decided we wouldn’t replace them. She justified it because a new piece of software was due to be introduced which would automate some things we were having to do manually and move responsibility for some tasks to other teams. That makes sense, except that system wasn’t in place yet so there was an immediate shortage of staff to deal with the same workload. As more people left she carried on with her policy of not replacing them. To make things worse the system which was supposed to reduce our workload never got fully implemented so the workload reduction she expected and based her staffing on never actually happened. Of course by that time she had moved on but then the divisional leadership kept complaining about the team not performing how they wanted it to. Our new boss asked us for our views on what the problems were and so I gave a detailed answer and copied it to the divisional leadership. I pointed out that the team went from 7 full time people to 2.5 to run a seven day a week service based on a system coming in which was never fully implemented. I made the point that there simply wasn’t the manpower to do everything they expected us to do and those of us that were left were consistently working additional hours to deliver what we were delivering. Oddly enough the complaints stopped after that and we got more staff, although not enough.

This has become the norm in alot of companies and they certainly will not give a pay rise regardless what you do. They’d rather put you on a pip and make you leave than make positive changes.
