The VIX index is made up of SPX options and it really tells us if there is more uncertainty in the market as derived from options premiums. Options can be used to speculate on the upside and the downside, the VIX calculation uses both. #stockmarketexplained

I’ve always wondered about this. Maybe it’s known more as a downside indicator because the worst bad days in the market are generally more volatile than the best good days, so may only look at it when the market drops hard.
