Here I’m only talking about situations where a toddler is not given added sugar at home - but may still be exposed to it outside the home. * This does not apply to medical conditions, other age groups, or special circumstances. * There is no room for debate when something is clearly harmful to the child or poses a choking hazard. First and foremost, try to teach your toddler to ask for your permission before accepting anything from anyone. 1. Politely decline - with or without an explanation You do not owe anyone an explanation. However, it is good to respond differently when the offer comes from another child: - “Oh, thank you for being kind, but we’re not hungry right now.” With an adult stranger, even a simple “No, thank you” is enough. With an adult you know, you can also offer a logical explanation: - “We haven’t introduced added sugar yet,” 2. Bring your toddler’s own snacks or meals This can work at a playground, in a park, at a family gathering, or even at a children’s party - where you can arrange with the host to place muffins on your child’s plate that look exactly like everyone else’s, but without added sugar. 3. Accept that one “unhealthy” snack isn’t a catastrophe When the situation is such that you risk looking unreasonable or putting your child in an uncomfortable position, you can make an exception. An occasional snack like this, in a reasonable amount, is unlikely to harm your child as long as the other 99% of their diet follows your preferred approach. 4. Don’t make your toddler feel different or make other children seem wrong A toddler will never fully and correctly understand what all of this means. You should manage these situations without drawing unnecessary attention to it. Otherwise, you increase the risk of your child being excluded by others, seeing other people through their parents’ eyes or developing an inappropriate attitude toward other people’s personal choices. 5. If it becomes a pattern, limit or avoid those situations If we need to visit somebody less often, so be it! If we have the option of moving our child to another daycare because the current one feeds them terribly, so be it! #mom #momlife #toddler #parents
