I’m not sure what type of med student you are, however there’s a couple of things that come into play here. 1). We need a past medical history not just for the hospital. You stated the patient was decompensated, and we do in fact have to know what medications they’re on for further contraindications if we need to give them something. 2). If a first responder/ provider suddenly feels unsafe on scene REGARDLESS of why, we are to protect ourselves first and are absolutely allowed to leave and it is not against the law. 3). We don’t take orders from doctors that aren’t on the medical direction line, just not the way the job works. I’m understanding it’s stressful and to see a family member like that is horrible, but we still have protocols and parts of our job we can’t skip for example, a past medical history and medication list. How would u expect them to treat the patient if they know absolutely nothing?

As someone who use to work in the field. Here are the takes, 1.) You are not the dr on scene you are a loved one. You do not get to tell an emt/paramedic what to do just cause you’re a dr. You are not this patients pcp. You are not the hospital. You are a loved one, you have to seperate yourself from this. That doesn’t go for just you that goes for every medical professional. 2.) you need to obtain a full medical history/meds etc. just cause it’s “at the hospital” doesn’t mean that’s not what we tell the drs. We walk into a an er and say welp here ya go this is so and so. They’re having so and so issues. Bye. You better believe that we are getting a phone call from a supervisor. 3.) You mention that the patient is going down hill. Well if that’s the case the smart thing to do is to go to the nearest hospital. That may not be the hospital that person is familiar with so that is why a PMH. Is important. 4.) it doesn’t matter what the reason is, I’m guessing it’s cause you’re yelling at this person that if they don’t feel safe in they can in fact just leave. It is not against the law. If you really wanna know what it’s like to work on an ambulance do some ride time.

I’m sure there was more to this situation and other factors may have been at play in this situation but there are some key issues with what you have said in this video. Also not affiliated with twin city in any way. It is absolutely not against the law to leave an unsafe situation as an EMS provider. They are directly trained to walk away if a situation is unsafe and call for police and return only after they clear the scene. Also it doesn’t matter the credentials of anyone on the scene unless the doctor is going to ride in the ambulance and assume all care of the pt they are to be considered a common bystander for pt care purposes. Lastly a complete pt history is vital to be obtained when able bc no it’s not immediately accessible and sometimes pts need to be treated before they can get it at the hospital. Or if they need to give the pt medication in the ambulance they need to know if it will kill them if it interacts with something they are taking. As a medical professional you should know this. If you really cared about this pt you would understand the questions and make a document for the possible next time with the history, meds, allergies ect that a medical provider will need to know.

I am not excusing what happened at all, but specifically with getting medical history EMS doesn’t have access to hospital systems. If the pt began to decompensate on the way to the hospital and needed medications they needed to know if their were allergies or of the meds that they would’ve given would be contraindicated. Also for giving report needing to know if the pt is on blood thinners which is making the bleed worse, beta blockers which are lowering the HR hiding symptoms of shock. Again I am not excusing how they acted in this situation but just want to give you some understanding for future as to why EMS needs to have the patients medical information. EMS is not a taxi service with lights and sirens. I see in your bio you are a medical student, I wouldn’t expect you to feel comfortable treating a patient while knowing nothing about them other than they were unresponsive and there’s blood everywhere. This is not me trying to be rude at all but attempting to give you some understanding of EMS if you interact with them again. I hope the person recovers and is okay.

Also shame on the companies and corporations who employ people who can care less to even be in the medical field and in these critical environments but Walmart doesn’t pay as much so this is the job they applied for. I had a similar situation happen out of state this past weekend. My husband found a man down and unresponsive and he yelled for me since I’m a nurse to come handle the situation…. While he was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher she wanted to know all his medical info and demographics meanwhile this guy was literally a complete stranger who was unconscious.

I can already tell by this video that you’re leaving out A LOT of information and you’re trying to paint a false narrative. “Surrounded in a room full of doctors.” How big was this room? How many so called “doctors” were in there? If the hospital was that close and you are all a bunch of doctors and you didn’t want ems to try and treat him with anything then why didn’t you drive him yourself? And I would put money on it that if someone said they were unsafe there wasn’t just a friendly conversation. You don’t have to physically hit a first responder for them to feel unsafe and being African American myself, you using the race card is a pathetic excuse to justify your actions or any of your “doctor” family members actions. And being a doctor doesn’t excuse anyone’s behavior. If the family was upset I can almost guarantee the scene began to get even slightly hostile while everyone’s emotions were out of control
