Kolawole Erunkulu had been driving his taxi for 12 hours straight when he swerved across a carriageway and crashed into a parked car killing the driver. Footage from Erunkulu’s car shows him nodding off on the A23 in Surrey shortly before 6.30am on 17 August. His Audi then swerved across the carriageway and collided with the driver of a Volkswagen, Philip Dray, who was parked at the side of the road. Mr Dray parked in a layby for a break and was opening his driver’s door to climb back into his vehicle when he was struck by Erunkulu. The 59-year-old died at the scene. Data from Erunkulu's employers and his interior car camera showed he had been driving for around 53 hours over the three days leading up to the collision. His longest rest period between drives was three days beforehand, for just hours. Other breaks included one of approximately four hours and two of around two hours. Before the crash, Erunkulu had been working as a taxi driver for around 12 hours, with only minor breaks. Erunkulu admitted causing death by dangerous in June and on Tuesday, was jailed for six years. He has also been disqualified from driving for eight years - which runs concurrently and will be subject to an extended retest if he reapplies for his licence.
