@memdaypbs: “We’re available.” In the fire department, it’s a simple phrase: ready to respond when the call comes. On September 11, 2001, every firefighter became available. Off-duty members came in. Retired firefighters showed up. Departments across the region sent help. Everyone was there to help get people out—floor by floor, stairwell by stairwell. My aunt’s cousin, Gerard Dewan, was coming off shift when the towers were struck by the planes. He grabbed his gear and jumped on one of the Ladder 3 trucks. Him and his brothers in that house were part of the effort that saved tens of thousands of lives.
