Master technician with a real answer here. This vehicle has a windshield defogger. It works by sending electrical current through thin metal strips inside of or on top of the base layer of glass. The crack in the windshield is either causing the defroster to short and smoke or the defroster is now contacting something making it smoke. You’re welcome.

I would guess I would guess the chip in the windshield somehow shorted the defroster circuit.
