My theory is that no one (very few) truly believes in God/afterlife 100% because if they did they’d be sad that they won’t see their loved one anymore but they wouldn’t be devastated because they’d know that in the grand scheme they’d see them for eternity once the join them. The fact that we experience such profound sadness is proof for me that nobody actually believes it.

I disagree. As an atheist I wish so bad I can believe in some magical thinking that I will see my family again. I am jealous of those that believe they will see their loved one again. They operate differently in the world. I wish I had that.

As an atheist, I do not fear death. I knew nothing before I was born and will know nothing after I die. My energy will return to the universe. We are composed of atoms, electrons, carbon and simple put star dust. You are correct, my body will return to the earth when my ashes are spread. My energy/spirit will return to the cosmos. No more consciousness, no more ego. Absolutely nothing to fear. Having been bedside with many dying relatives and friends, I have only seen true fear from the most religious. It was heartbreaking to witness. Death is unavoidable. Until we get there we will never know the true outcome. I don’t worry about something I have no control over. For me personally, it’s just another mystery that will only be solved when it happens. I concentrate on life and making this world a better place.

For catholics, the reason is because we can’t say they will go to heaven. The only people we know are in heaven are canonized Saints. For everyone else, we don’t know if they will go to heaven, purgatory, or hell. Marian apparitions and visions from Saints have shown that it is very likely most people, even “good” people or those that identify as christian, will unfortunately end up in hell. So that is why loss is still hard on a personal level, though we should be giving that suffering up to God ideally.

As an atheist, accepting death is pretty easy. Accepting suffering before death is still very hard. If a loved one suddenly dies, I can mourn and move on. If a loved one is suffering in life, I have nothing to look forward to for them or a reason to reassure them that things will be okay, especially in the case of chronic degenerative disease.

How can I just accept it? I’m a deconstructing Christian and my dad died when I was 13. I thought I knew where he was but now I don’t. I’m also fearful of death because I have children and a husband now so I don’t want myself or any of us to die early like my dad did. It truly upsets me sometimes.

When my mom died, the preacher read a letter that my 8 year old niece had written where she said she couldn't wait to die to be able to go to heaven to see her grandma again. It was a big point in my awakening.

I recently discovered that I love walking through the local cemetery. it's a beautiful place with many tall trees and winding paths. I'm someone who ponders the concept of mortality at random times. as soon as I walked in the cemetery, I felt *happy* and relieved to be surrounded by thousands of graves. I think it's because the voice in my head that often says "you should think about the concept of mortality" was satisfied, so it was quiet. does this make sense to anyone else??? 😁

Accepting that there isn't an after life would make me be the best person I could be so that my legacy of goodness would last beyond my lifetime. Years after my death, I would want little kids telling stories about the old woman who lived across the street and gave out the best Halloween treats.

I’m an atheist from birth, i was never groomed. But i would like to think that we have a soul or aura, and at the time of death here is a birth somewhere else or into something else. 🤙🇺🇸🌊🌈💙🌍🌎🌏😎

I think death is beautiful. That is what gives meaning to life. Living and expierencing life is amazing and wonderful even with the pain. Without the pain you do not learn to appreciate the small joys. I am athiest and was raised athiest. My purpose on this planet is to expierence it and leave this world a kinder and more loving place. Thats it. Its simple. Just exist.

Separation hurts. Even if you are completely sure that the person is in a better place. Mourning isn't a sign of some lack of belief. Abraham mourned Sarah's death. Jacob mourned his son Joseph for 16 years. The whole nation mourned Moses and Joshua. In all these instances, it is absurd to think that their sadness stemmed from a faulty faith. Wether you believe the events I just mentioned are fiction or real, the bible is clear in its message: The death of a loved one is painful, and the correct response is mourning. Not being joyous that they 'went to a better place'

So you're saying religion is a survival mechanism to cope with life and its eventual end?

I grew up Christian and when I was younger I would ask my parents this very question. "Why is everyone sad? They get to live happily forever now". Mind you, I never fully believed it myself but it made sense logically to me. But I would only get confused or even angry looks as a child for making those comments out loud lol

I think there’s probably a difference between people who worry about death on a day to day basis, people who worry about others dying, vs people who have personal trouble as they face death themselves. Is there research you know of that teases out these reactions?

1. This is such an interesting topic to discuss. Thank You! 2. I'm one of those who fears death especially of others. 3. Ironically, I've survived my own death and that forced me to confront certain things. This continues to be an ongoing area of work. I've done my best to reclaim my 2nd chance at life but life has also been extremely challenging since then and the juxtaposition of a life saved vs a pretty challenging life since has been jarring. I almost wish I had died coz what was my life saved for, you know? 4. I'm also deconstructing my faith. Formerly born again, currently spiritual-not-religious but also having my spirituality founded on Christianity is confusing. 5. Endlessly amused and validated that moderately Christian folks struggle more with death coz that is true for me (although at this point I'm barely religious) lol

I’m not suicidal but I legit look forward to the afterlife. I really don’t want to live to an old age. But I don’t believe in hell. I think that is why religious people struggle because most do believe in hell.

I would recommend YouTuber Duncan Clarke, he had a video making a tier list of afterlives that ironically used the EXACT same scenario. nice stuff
