@theartcoach: Tap the link in my bio to start the drawing drills course. Crosshatching shouldn’t just make something darker. Your lines can also tell us what the surface is doing. If you’re shading something round, let the lines wrap around it. If the surface changes direction, let the hatching change direction with it. That’s cross contour hatching. You’re basically using every hatch mark as a tiny piece of information about the three-dimensional form underneath. And you still want control. Keep each pass of lines parallel. Keep the spacing consistent. Slow down enough that the marks feel intentional. Then layer additional passes when you need darker values. Once you start thinking this way, hatching stops feeling like “filling in the shadows.” You’re actually drawing the form with your shading. What artists are saying about Drawing Drills: ⭐️ “I can already see a difference in my line control.” ⭐️ “These drills have finally given me something specific to practice.” ⭐️ “I’m feeling much more confident with my drawing.” ⭐️ “The exercises are simple, but I can actually see myself improving.”

How do you know how long the lines should be? Like in the first clip why not make them half as long?
