POV: The first time you confessed to Jay, you were fourteen. You had rehearsed your confession for an entire week. You had written it in your notes app, deleted it, rewritten it, practiced it in front of your mirror, and even asked your best friend whether it sounded “too obvious.” It probably did. Everyone knew Jay was popular. He was good at sports, funny without trying, and somehow knew almost everyone in school. You, on the other hand, were perfectly happy staying out of the spotlight. So naturally, you developed the worst possible crush. On him. You finally caught him alone after school. “Jay?” He turned around. “Yeah?” You suddenly forgot every word you had practiced. Your hands felt cold. “I…” He waited. You took a breath. “I like you.” Silence. Jay stared at you. You stared at the floor. Three seconds passed. Then five. He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. You laughed awkwardly. “Okay.” He looked surprised. “Wait, I…” “No, it's fine.” You walked away before he could finish. You didn't look back. And you never confessed again. For years, you convinced yourself that his silence had been an answer. A rejection without the awkwardness of actually saying no. It was embarrassing. So you made yourself a promise. Never again. Fast forward three years. New school. New uniform. New classmates. New beginning. You walked into your classroom on the first day, determined to become someone completely unrecognizable from the girl who had confessed to Jay in a quiet hallway. You sat down. Opened your notebook. Looked up. And nearly dropped your pen. Jay was standing at the front of the classroom. Your new classmate. Your new problem. He looked at you. His eyebrows lifted. Then he smiled. “Y/n?” You immediately looked back down. “No.” He laughed. “You're really going to pretend you don't know me?” “I don't.” “You literally just said my name.” “I didn't.” “You said no.” “That could've been directed at anything.” Jay walked over and pulled the chair beside you. “You haven't changed.” You looked at him. “Neither have you.” “That's not what everyone else says.” You rolled your eyes. He smiled. Then he glanced at your notebook. “You still write really small.” You froze. He remembered. You closed your notebook. “Why are you talking to me?” “Because we're classmates.” “Talk to someone else.” “I could.” “Great.” “But I don't want to.” You looked at him. He was smiling like he had just won an argument. You hated that smile. Mostly because you remembered liking it. From that day onward, Jay became incredibly annoying. He borrowed your notes even though he had his own. He asked you questions he already knew the answers to. He somehow always ended up sitting near you during lunch. And whenever you tried to avoid him, he'd appear from somewhere. One afternoon, you were walking down the hallway when you heard footsteps behind you. “You're walking fast.” You didn't turn around. “I'm busy.” “Doing what?” “Walking.” “Important?” “Very.” He caught up. “You've been avoiding me.” “No.” “You changed hallways when you saw me.” “I wanted to see the other hallway.” “You took the stairs instead of the elevator.” “Exercise.” “You hid behind your friend.” “I wasn't hiding.” “You absolutely were.” You stopped walking. “Why do you care?” Jay stopped too. “Because you're acting weird.” “Maybe I don't want to talk to you.” His smile disappeared for a second. Then he nodded. “Okay.” He walked away. You expected to feel relieved. Instead, you felt strangely guilty. The next morning, he didn't bother you. He didn't sit beside you. Didn't steal your pen. Didn't make stupid comments. Didn't even look at you. You should've been happy. You weren't. At lunch, you finally walked over to him. “Are you mad?” He looked up from his food. “No.” “You're quiet.” “You told me you didn't want me talking to you.” “I didn't mean…” He raised an eyebrow. “You didn't?” You sighed. “No.” “Then what did you mean?” You hesitated. “I just don't understand why you're suddenly acting like we're friends.” Jay looked at you for a moment. “We knew each other before.” “Barely.” “I remember.” +COMSEC #ENHYPEN #JAY #foryou #pov #au
