He is a CHILD who has never learned love a day in his life. The grooming came after. Denji lost his mother to illness, his father killed himself when he was little, and inherited his father's MASSIVE debt to the yakuza. He's been working for them to pay it back. With barely any money left at the end of every month to get by. Horrible living conditions and nothing but work. His dreams were very small, good food, a proper place to live, and a girlfriend. He was a goon before he got picked up by Makima (an adult woman), who grooms him. She is USING his pre existing desires for her goals. But people tend to completely ignore the latter and just lable him a goon instead of seeing the whole situation. a lot of people, mostly guys, don't understand the extent of how bad the whole thing is.
