Getting Back in the Saddle Last year changed just about everything in my life. After a long series of medical setbacks, ultimately resulting in the loss of my left leg below the knee, I've spent much of this year learning how to get back into the saddle—quite literally and figuratively. And I'm working again. I'm writing. I'm illustrating. I'm designing. Before last year's medical crisis, much of my bread-and-butter work came from commercial art and design—book covers, logos, advertising, illustration and publishing-related projects. When I became ill and was unable to work, much of that business simply stopped. Now I'm rebuilding it. I've been assembling and sending portfolios to publishers and prospective clients, reconnecting with people in the business, taking on new design and illustration work, and developing new projects of my own. I'm also actively writing The Breaths of Ra, an adventure novel set against the backdrop of Egypt in 1922, along with other book and publishing projects that are beginning to move forward. For the first time in quite a while, I feel as though the pieces are beginning to move in the right direction. The difficult part is the gap between rebuilding the work and rebuilding the income. That's what this fundraiser is about. The physical realities of life with a prosthetic leg have changed some of the kinds of work I can realistically pursue. That makes rebuilding the creative business I've spent most of my adult life developing more important than ever—not simply because it's what I love to do, but because it's something I know how to do, something I've successfully done before, and something I believe can provide a sustainable road forward. The problem is that rebuilding takes time. So I'm doing something I'm not particularly comfortable doing: asking for a little help creating that runway. I'm not asking anyone to finance an indefinite situation. I'm asking for some breathing room while I rebuild—help with ordinary living and operating expenses while the work begins generating income again, along with some resources I can put directly back into production, advertising, marketing and promotion. There is work on my desk. There are projects underway. There are people I'm approaching and opportunities I'm pursuing. What I need right now is enough runway to keep doing those things without every immediate expense pulling me away from the work required to become self-sustaining again. Those of you who have known me for any length of time know that I've spent most of my adult life making things—books, artwork, illustration, design, radio, magazines, publishing projects, strange historical rabbit holes, and more than a few adventures along the way. The last year knocked a lot of that sideways. It also changed me. There are things I once took for granted that I now have to approach differently. There are things I've had to relearn. And there are days when accomplishing what once seemed routine takes considerably more effort than it used to. But I'm here. I'm working. And I'm building again. I know times are tight for a lot of people, so please don't contribute anything you can't comfortably afford. If you've enjoyed something I've written, drawn, designed, broadcast or created over the years, and you'd like to throw a few dollars into the hat to help me get this next chapter underway, I would be enormously grateful. And if contributing isn't practical, sharing this fundraiser is every bit as welcome. I'll also use this page to post updates about what I'm creating and where things are going. I want those who choose to help to be able to see the work happening—the books, artwork and projects their support is giving me the time and resources to pursue. I'm not entirely sure what the road ahead looks like. But after the year I've had, I've gotten pretty good at figuring out how to keep moving down that road. Thank you for helping me get back in the saddle. —Scotty Roberts
