Want to boost your memory and stop forgetting what you studied? Here are neuroscience-backed ways to do it ⬇️ Save this for later and share it with that forgetful friend 😉 When you learn something new, specific neurons fire together to form a neural circuit-this is called encoding, the first draft of a memory. But a draft isn't enough. Encoding ⏭️ Memory Consolidation ⏭️ Memory Retention After learning, these circuits must be stabilized and moved from short-term to long-term memory so you can recall them later. If this doesn't happen, those memories fade 🗑️ Here's how to protect those circuits and make them stick: 🧠 Previewing & Predicting. Do this prior to your lectures, where you scan keywords, or make predictive questions about the topic. Avoid making vague predictions (i.e. it'll be about muscular system), but make them specific and testable (i.e. what are 3 types of muscle cells) 🧠 Sleep and Rest. Quality nighttime sleep and naps are important for memory consolidation. The new & fragile memories in short-term memory in our hippocampus are moved to and stored in long-term making future retrieval possible. Without sleep, naps, or quiet rest (awake), you interrupt this process leading to poor memory. 🧠 Active Retrieval Practice. After each study session, close your notes and recall key points aloud or in writing (form of brain dumping). Testing yourself trains your brain in retrieving that stored memory. As you recall and recite these concepts, you are also strengthening neural pathways more than passive review. So throw that re-reading practice out the window 🪟 Want my exact science-backed methods for stronger encoding during lectures? That's what I teach inside the Note-Taking Framework Method 💡 Remember, encoding is like writing the first draft of memory. If this draft is shallow or incomplete, consolidation (storing it) will be weak, and retention (retrieving it) will fail 🪫 Check the link in my bio ❤️ #notetaking #strongmemory #studytipsforstudents #biomed #productivitytips
