Han van Meegeren was a Dutch painter dismissed as talentless. He spent 6 years secretly mastering Vermeer's technique and forged paintings so convincing that top experts authenticated them as real. One ended up in Nazi commander Hermann Göring's collection. After WWII, facing execution for treason, he confessed to forgery and proved it by painting a new "Vermeer" under official supervision. At his trial, the evidence convinced the court: he was acquitted of treason and convicted only of fraud, sentenced to one year in prison. He never served a day of it, he died of a heart attack weeks later. True story.
