I’m a new grad RT who just flipped to nights after orienting on days and I dreaded going to nights but I LOVE IT. No mangament, no family, no dayshift business, more money, the vibes are way more chill. I bought a red lamp that I turn on when I get home, I take a hot shower immediately, and go to bed asap.

Girl I switched to nights in May and it was the best decision ever. I love it! Definitely stack your shifts, no caffeine after midnight, blackout shades and icy cold ac with fan, magnesium and melatonin, bonnet and eye mask. Lite breakfast when I get home. I sleep so good! Switching to nights saved my mental health and I make so much more money!!

I have a whole new appreciation for nights, but moving to night instead of dayshift was the best thing I ever did!

When the tired eyes start creeping in use eye drops to wake you back up. Then take yourself on a few laps around the unit. The movement and cold to your eyes wakes you right back up

Get ready for that 2am nausea, it happens to some of us but it’s brutallll if it happens. I sometimes take pepcide before my shift and it helps a bit.

Nice eye mask, magnesium glycinate, red light in your room, dr teals sleep spray, get to bed asap! Prioritize getting enough sleep. I can do 6-7 hours on days but it’s just not enough on nights!

Drink lots of water to avoid getting sleepy! A good hollow eye mask works wonders and planning vacations is what helps me stay awake during downtime.

Your sleep hygiene needs to be on point from day 1. On my first night back I take a nap around 3 and I’m up around 5, as soon as I get home in the morning I shower, put my white noise on my hatch alarm, and go to sleep. Don’t scroll, text, etc. INVEST IN GOOD BLACKOUT CURTAINS! on my last night on I only sleep 4 hours so I can get back on a normal sleep schedule that night. Wouldn’t trade nights for anything, you just have to be disciplined with your sleep. Good luck!

Black out curtains, go to the gym either right before work so you can shower and leave or immediately after work ain’t no in between, DO NOT eat unhealthy overnight the weight will gain quickly, if you need to stay awake it’s the perfect time to do all your planning unbothered since everyone is sleep at night

Be the best on the night shift that they want you so badly on day shift. Show them exactly who you are and kill it so you get all the experience in the world and always stand out from everyone. Put in the work and be about that life but also know this is all temporary and this too shall pass.

Stop drinking fluids at 4am! So you’re not getting woken up to pee. If you do have to wake up to pee put on a pair of sunglasses to keep it dark!! I keep a pair on my nightstand

Night shift vet tech here :) map out your snacks/meals! I work 7p-7a. I eat dinner around 5/5:30 and leave for work at 6. If I’m hungry at 8p, I’ll have some crackers. I have a protein bar and energy drink at 11:30p/12a to help me get some energy. I drink water all shift long. I eat my “dinner” around 2/3a. At 6a I start to get nauseous so I sip on a protein shake. I also drink that on the way home to help keep me awake. Music and cold ac are your besties driving home! Sitting down driving makes you more tired than you think. You got this!!
