@Dr. Ike I’m the eldest daughter, and I’ve been in therapy for a long time. Recently, I’ve noticed changes in myself that I’ve never experienced before. I see things I’ve never seen before, I react differently, and I do things I’ve never done before. It genuinely feels like my whole system is being reset, my mind, heart, soul and body are learning that they can function differently, and that peace is actually possible.
Change is hard, because when one person changes, the whole system around them has to adjust.
I’m married to the youngest son, and since these changes started happening within me, I’ve noticed that our entire marriage dynamic has been disturbed. I started giving more to myself, which naturally meant giving less of myself to him. I stopped automatically running to fix everyone’s problems. And for the first time, I don’t feel guilty about it. I’ve let go of so much.
Of course, he notices. He sees that I’m not behaving the way I used to, and I can see that he is making more efforts and taking on more responsibility. I don’t want to dismiss those efforts because I do see them. But if I’m being completely honest, something about them doesn’t feel natural to me. I don’t feel like they are coming from a deep process of self-reflection or from him genuinely questioning his own patterns. It feels more like a response to an emergency, like he suddenly realizes he might lose me, and that fear is pushing him to change.
And that makes me wonder about something.
I strongly believe that the biggest changes in our lives come from deep self-reflection, from reaching a point where you genuinely question yourself and decide to grow — not simply from an emergency situation where you suddenly realize you might lose someone.
So I’m curious, especially for those who understand family systems and the dynamics of being the youngest son: do you think this kind of change can actually last? Can someone truly heal and transform when the initial motivation is the fear of losing their partner, or does lasting change have to eventually come from within, independently of the relationship?
